Germany has been a Hague Apostille Convention member since 1966, so a Florida document sent to a German office needs one apostille from the Florida Department of State and nothing from a German consulate. The part that actually derails German files is not the apostille. It is the translation.

Why a US notarized translation gets refused in Germany

German authorities almost always want a German translation produced by a beeidigter or vereidigter Übersetzer — a translator sworn in before a German court and entered on the official register. That translator stamps and certifies the translation personally.

A translation done by a US agency and then notarized in Florida is a different thing entirely: the notary attests to a signature, not to linguistic accuracy. Sworn-translator appointment is governed by each German state, so the exact requirement varies by authority — the Federal Foreign Office advises asking the German office that will receive the document whether a translation prepared outside Germany will be recognised.

Practical sequence: apostille the Florida document first, then have the sworn translator translate the document and the apostille together. Ask the German office whether they require a translator sworn in Germany specifically, because some accept a certification obtained abroad and many do not.

Lebensbescheinigung: proof of life for a German pension

This is the most distinctive document in the Germany corridor and one most US notaries have never seen. Deutsche Rentenversicherung pays pensions to people living abroad, including many former German nationals and their widows and widowers in Florida. To keep paying, it periodically requires a Lebensbescheinigung, a life certificate confirming the pensioner is alive.

Check what your pension office actually asked for before ordering anything. Deutsche Rentenversicherung has offered a free digital proof of life since 2024, and the German Federal Foreign Office states that the paper form can be certified by a German mission or by a range of local authorities — an apostille is not part of that standard route. We would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need.

Where the receiving office specifically asks for a Florida notarization to be authenticated, that notarial certificate is what we apostille. The timing matters either way: these forms carry a return deadline and payments can be suspended when one is missed. If you are close to a deadline, say so when you call.

The same pattern covers pension applications, benefit continuation forms and Familienkasse child benefit paperwork.

Standesamt, Nachlassgericht, Rentenversicherung: who receives the document

Germany does not have one central receiving office, and knowing which one is asking tells you what format is needed.

Estates and inheritance from Florida

Inheritance is the second heavy use of Florida apostilles for Germany. German probate is document-driven and paper-hungry: a Florida death certificate, birth and marriage certificates proving the family line, a notarized declaration of inheritance or a renunciation, sometimes a power of attorney appointing a German lawyer to act. Every one of these is apostilled, and every one usually needs a sworn German translation.

Start with the Florida birth certificate guide and the Florida marriage certificate guide for how to obtain the certified copies the state will actually accept.

Dual citizenship after the 2024 reform

German nationality law changed on 27 June 2024, when the Act to Modernise Nationality Law took effect, and multiple citizenship is now broadly permitted, which has sharply increased the number of Florida families assembling German citizenship files. Descent claims and restoration cases under Article 116 both run on apostilled Florida vital records, and our guide to apostilles for dual citizenship walks through the document set.

Florida documents we apostille for Germany

Florida apostilles only Florida-issued documents and Florida notarizations. A German-issued record is apostilled in Germany by the relevant Landgericht, Bezirksregierung or Regierungspräsidium, never by us. You can confirm Germany and every other member on the Hague member list.

Cost

International shipping is additional and quoted at cost. If you need more than one document handled under the $299 package, call us for a quote. Full detail on the cost page, and the mechanics on our Florida apostille service page.

How it runs

  1. Send us the German letter or form. What the office wrote is the specification.
  2. Get the document into apostille-ready shape: a certified Florida vital record, or a Florida notarization. If it needs notarizing, we can do it online.
  3. We file in person at the Florida Department of State in Tallahassee.
  4. We ship it back by FedEx, in the US or to a German address.
  5. You commission the sworn translation once the apostille is attached.

Questions from clients dealing with German offices

Can I use a translation I had notarized here?

Usually not. Most German offices want a translator sworn before a German court, though the requirement is set at state level and varies. Confirm with the specific office before paying for any translation.

Do I translate before or after the apostille?

After. The translator should render the apostille certificate as well, and an apostille attached later would sit outside the translation.

Does Germany accept an apostilled photocopy?

For vital records, order a fresh certified copy from Florida Vital Statistics instead. German registrars often want a recent certified copy rather than an old one, and a plain photocopy is not apostillable in any case.

My mother receives a German pension and needs a life certificate signed.

That is the Lebensbescheinigung. Start by reading the letter: Deutsche Rentenversicherung now offers a free digital proof of life, and the paper form can often be certified locally or at a German mission with no apostille involved. If the pension office specifically requires an apostilled Florida notarization, she signs before a Florida notary and we apostille that notarial certificate. Watch the deadline on the form.

Can you apostille my German birth certificate?

No. A German record is apostilled by the competent German authority. We handle documents issued or notarized in Florida.

How long is a German apostille file valid?

The apostille does not expire, but a Standesamt or Nachlassgericht commonly asks for vital records issued within the last six months.
